Your PCMCIA bridge must be set to "PCIC mode" in your BIOS setup. In this mode, the bridge will completely ignore CardBus cards. Go into your BIOS settings and change it to "auto" or "cardbus" mode. -- Dave

Thanks for the advice - your suggestion did fix the problem.
The BIOS on the Toshiba 480CDT has three possible setting for "PC Card Controller Mode":
* PCIC Compatible * CardBus/16-bit * Auto-Selected
I had it set to Auto-Selected. This gave the Linux problem described.
