Why does it take so long to boot?

First my question. My laptop takes about 3 minutes for my eth0 to come up when I boot(from my /var/log/messages). I do have my system configued to use DHCP and pump. This is an annoyingly long time. I am wondering why. Anything I can do about it????? My system Dell Latitude 500 mhz, card is Dell/3Com 3CCFE575CT. Only 1 card in the bay. I really appreciate this web site and my system does work so I don't really have much to complain about. thanks, -karl
