Also, the modem stopped working after upgrading to 3.1.8, event when the ethernet card isn't in the machine. It looks as if the serial module loads correctly, and there are no errors reported in /var/log/messages, but minicom and chat fail to see it. Chat: Can't get terminal parameters Input/output errors.
