am trying to get redhat linux 6.1 to recognize a Hayes Accura 336 V.34 + EThernet pcmcia card (model no - XT00US) on a Compaq Armada 1573D notebook PC. I can't appear to locate driver info for this card anywhere. please note the following diagnostics: 1) "cat /var/run/stab" returns "unsupported card". 2) "cardctl ident" returns "Socket 0 : Product Info: "Hayes Microcomputyer Products Inc", "Accura336", "ME595 1.01970309" ManfId: 0x01da, 0x0023 function: 6 (network) 3) "cardctl config" returns Socket 0: Vcc = 5.0, Vpp1 = 5.0, Vpp2 = 5.0 would appreciate some help here. thanks and regards

You are welcome to experiment with existing drivers; use the output of "cardctl ident" to make an entry for your card for /etc/pcmcia/config, using the other multifunction card entries as examples. You'll want to try things like: card "Hayes Accura" manfid 0x01da, 0x0023 bind "xxx_cs", "serial_cs" where "xxx_cs" is probably either "pcnet_cs" or "smc91c92_cs". You can also try the form: bind "xxx_cs" to 0, "serial_cs" to 1 (there are two varieties of multifunction cards, which differ in how the functions are organized) -- Dave

I recently purchased an Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II adapter. I thought this was an OEM modem of the Xircom RealPort card, but it turns out it isn't. I've tried adding a clone of the RealPort card to /etc/pcmcia/config, but I get the message from tulip_cb that the EEPROM is missing. The 21143 version is identified, but the bus doesn't work. The serial driver doesn't load either, reporting a missing Tuple. The odd thing is I checked the E100bnt.sys file from Win98 and the chipset is identified as an 82557. Is anyone working on this card? I know the Tulip chipset is supported by the PCMCIA package, but as far as I can tell the 82557 isn't.

I have a Dell Lattitude CP (166MMX) with a Xircom CEM33 ethernet/modem card. With windows95 both netwerk and modem work (even when I use them at the same time). But with Linux, I only can get the ethernet interface to work. There are no errors in the syslog, but there is no reaction from the modem to anything. I have been having a problem with my Xircom pcmcia multifunction card. It initialates fine and all, but when I assign the device an IP address and such it work. Then, whenever I try to connect to a remote host whether it be through "ping" or whatever I get a timeout response. I'm having the same problem with that card here on a Dell Latitude CPi A running Debian potato with a 2.2.13 kernel and cs 3.1.4. In the past, I had the ethernet part of the card working fine, but the modem was broken. After several days of tinkering, I got the modem to work, and at the time I did not need the ethernet. Today was the first time that I needed the ethernet again. As the machine starts up (or when the card is inserted,) everything is fine (no errors are reported) until an attempt is made to send over eth0. At that time the following errors start appearing in /var/log/messages: eth0: Transmit timed out, status 60660000, CSR12 000000c2, resetting . . . which appears over and over again. If I ping for a long time (> 20 seconds) I will eventually get whole slew of replies all at once, usually right around the time the error message appears in the log. Judging from the card's network activity light, it looks like the card is not sending each individual ping. I have also noticed the machine with the card does not respond to arp requests in a timely manner, either. This does not appear to be purely a shared irq problem because I have the same symptoms regardless of whether the serial driver is loaded or not, and anyway I think irq's are used for more for receiving, not transmitting. I'm backing out all of the changes that I made to get the modem to work in an effort to get the ethernet operational again, but I've not yet had any success. The receiver part of the ethernet interface seems ok, because tcpdump works fine and sees the network traffic, if I have name resolution disabled. Robert

I think that the key setting is to disable CONFIG_PNP_BIOS during pcmcia-cs's make config. The modem still does not work upon insertion and/or powerup, but I've worked around this problem by setting the serial_cs driver briefly to polled mode (setserial /dev/modem irq 0) then back to its assigned interrupt. I had to slightly hack /etc/pcmcia/serial to automate this. The card itself does not revive properly from a suspend, but apmd can be used to electronically eject the card immediately before suspend. The card is automatically reconized when returning from suspend mode. Good enough for me. Robert Bordelon

I am runnign redhat 6.1 with kernel 2.2.13 and pcmcia 3.1.6, and have the cardbus set to 16bit in the BIOS. The Xircom card gets recognized correctly because I always hear two beeps when the machine boots up. I can ping both 127.0.0.1 and my own ip. But if I try to ping other machines on the network, it always says destination unreachable. Also, I got the timeout message in the message log. "transmit timeout" may just be an interrupt conflict. That might actually be easier to diagnose using the modem. You can do: setserial /dev/modem irq 0 to use the modem in polled mode. If that works, you know you've got an interrupt conflict. So... I'd then start excluding interrupts in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts, and see if you can get the modem to work without the setserial command. Be warned that Toshiba laptops have known problems with Linux PCMCIA, and the RBEM cards are also troublesome. So this is a particularly vexing combination. Also, there is a bad interaction in Red Hat 6.1 that may affect operation of the modem. All these things are talked about in the latest BUGS file, at: http://pcmcia.sourceforge.org/ftp/BUGS -- Dave

I just got a Linksys Etherfast 56k LANmodem to get away from the evil dongle problem. Installed without a hitch... I removed the 3com card, plugged in the Linksys, and ran. Very cool. However, after I suspend, I find I oscillate between normal ping times and ping times almost = 1s. This on a local net where normal ping time is about 1ms. If I remove the card and reinsert it, all is well again. Any ideas? Toshiba 315CDS in Cardbus mode, 16-bit card, Linux 2.2.13, PCMCIA-CS 3.1.4.

It initialates very fine and all, i can send a ping and working with telnet, but when I try to copy (rcp) bigger file (or more files) that works (copying) some small time and than ´hang´. When I tried upgrading my kernel from 2.2.12 to 2.2.14 the modem part of my Xircom CEM33 card stopped working. I've looked into this a little, and the problem seems to be with the pcmcia card services. The combination kernel 2.2.12 + pcmcia-cs 3.1.2 worked flawlessly. My modem was recognized and placed on /dev/ttyS3. When booting kernel 2.2.14 + pcmcia-cs 3.1.8, the modem is placed on /dev/ttyS2, and it doesn't work. Only the ethernet part of the CEM33 functions. At this point I did some experiments. Booting 2.2.14 without any of the 3.1.8 modules and then inserting the "old" 3.1.2 modules by insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/i82365.o insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/ds.o insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/xirc2ps_cs.o insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/serial_cs.o leads to a properly functioning modem. I thought I'd also try and compile an unstable kernel, 2.3.39, as I'd read that the pcmcia code will be included with the kernel. This sounds to me like a bug in your distribution (SuSE?). Maybe you should determine what in the startup scripts is invoking setserial. The PCMCIA serial script may invoke setserial, however, it does this after the card is configured and the serial port is already assigned. So some other startup script is (apparently) disabling your ttyS0 device. I would start with something like "grep setserial /etc/rc.d/init.d/*" and see what that turns up. -- Dave

My first suggestion would be a PCMCIA driver upgrade. Some bugs in CardBus resource management have been fixed since 3.1.3 came out. The card can only use one interrupt. -- Dave

Also, my in my bios, I can set up the serial, ir, sound, and parallel ports, so I know those ports and irqs, etc. A couple weeks ago, it seemed that I could get the ethernet part of the card to work, but I didn't have a network to test it on. Also, with the kernel serial drivers, I have many_ports, and share_irqs enabled, but I don't think that makes a difference. The combo card is built in, so I assume my macine has 4 pcmcia slots. From the output of "dump_cis", I might be able to judge how easy it would be to support this card. It probably uses an already supported chipset. The configuration information for multifunction cards is often incomplete or incorrect, however, and there are some cases where the only way to support a card (even if it uses a supported chipset) is to get supplementary information from the card vendor. -- Dave

Hi, I have a Sager laptop, with a PCMLM56 Linksys lan+modem. I use Slackware 7.0, which comes with 2.2.13. I upgraded to 2.2.14 and recompiled PC Card services 3.0.14. With kernel 2.2.13 the card works perfect, although I still haven't used the lan, but from W98 is ok (it works). When I insert the card it gets its io, mem and irq, but the modem does not work. My laptop little monitoring LCD tells me that there is some communication with the PC card, but the modem does nothing. I tried minicom, ppp-go (chat & pppd),and a simple echo "ATZ" > /dev/ttyS2. I checked permisions and all that, and they are ok. If I reboot with 2.2.13 back again, the card works, but then with 2.2.14 it does not. I have not had other reports of similar problems, so I don't believe that it is a kernel bug. But I'm not sure what the problem is, either. The easy way to determine if interrupt sharing is the problem is to just do: setserial /dev/modem irq 0 and see if the modem seems to work better after that. I installed RedHat 6.2 (kernel v.2.2.14) which is released this week, on my new notebook. It does recognize the card ( one beep at the beginning and Rx & Tx LED blinking once after ). But, when I tried the modem for PPP, it never works. Is there a work around for this problem. By the way, I tried 'setserial /dev/modem irq 0', but it fails, too. Thanks. Jai

The original poster described a workaround. I have not been able to reproduce the problem. However, if "setserial /dev/modem irq 0" fails, then you do not have the same problem he reported. You should hear two beeps when you insert the card, not one. Can you be more specific about how the modem fails? Do you get any error messages? PPP is not a good choice for testing because you might have a PPP configuration problem; can you test with something simpler like minicom? Does the network work? And system log messages might be helpful. -- Dave

You guess was right. I eliminated I/O port except 0x0100~0x04ff. Besides the default IRQ setting in config.opts, I exclude IRQ 3,5, and 10 which are occupied by other devices. Then, it starts seeing my modem and network card. Now their I/O port addresses are same as they are with MS windows. Thanks. Jai

I've been using a Linksys Etherfast Lanmodem 56K (PCMLM56) and had a problem that was similar to the one posted, so I thought I'd post the solution I found in case it might be useful to anyone else. Previously, I was running Red Hat 6.1 and the card worked fine right out of the box. But when I switched to Red Hat 6.2 the modem part of the card wouldn't work. I'm running Mandrake 7.1 now and found the same problem: the card is recognized properly, the serial_cs and pcnet_cs modules are loaded with no errors, and the modem gets assigned to /dev/ttyS2 with IRQ 3. This is all the same as it was before with Red Hat 6.1, but now with RH 6.2 or Mandrake 7.1 the ethernet works but the modem doesn't. No error messages are generated at all in /var/log/messages. Minicom can't talk to the modem, and if I do "query modem" from kppp I just get "Sorry, the modem doesn't respond." Also, setting the IRQ to 0 doesn't help at all. Other modem cards I tried (3Com and Xircom) still worked fine, so it appears that the problem was only with the Linksys. Here's what I found to fix the problem (in Mandrake 7.1, using kernel 2.2.16, pcmcia version 3.1.14). In /etc/pcmcia/config.opts there's a line: # Extra port range for IBM Token Ring include port 0xa00-0xaff I found that when I commented out this line, the modem worked again. -Aaron Barth

You guessed it: tcpdump places the interface in promiscuous mode, which happens to make the card "work". I did an "ifconfig eth0 promisc" and tried the backup again. That's more or less it. Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 3Com 3CXEM556BC on a Dell Inspiron 7500 running RedHat 6.2. This is a multifunction card: it's the serial modem half of the card which is giving me trouble. The card is properly identified, and the modem seems to work just fine at low bandwidth. As soon as I begin to fetch a large file, say, the transmission quits after about 100k. (This is at 28.8kbps.) I can restart the download and witness the same behavior over and over. (Unfortunately, I am not sure if this represents loss of received or (un)sent packets.) I'm not sure what to try next. What are you using for downloads? (is this a PPP or slip connection, or something else?) Can you vouch that you have a good quality phone line? When you say you can restart the download, what does that mean, exactly? Do you hang up and start a new connection? Or can you restart it without dropping your current call? What about the ethernet port? Have you tested that? I would probably try bumping the card onto several other interrupts to see if that makes any difference. -- Dave

The hardware works fine under Win98, so I believe that the modem functions and that the phone line is clean. 2. The LAN behavior of the card is just dandy. I can pull about 820k/sec on my local ethernet, which is roughly competitive with the other machines around here. 3. I am using a PPP connection. Here is the behavior I observe: I log on. All is well. Under light load it performs as I would expect. As soon as I do something which saturates the channel (i.e., download a large file), after receipt of about 60-100k the download quits. If I watch the pretty graphs that is made by RedHat's usernet window, I can see the load climb up to full throughput (about 3k/sec) and then suddently drop off. This is followed by some pings at regular intervals. If I cancel the download (but remain connected) and begin again, I observe the same behavior. I will experiment with the interrupts as you suggest. Thanks very much for your help, Incidentally, I'd like to purchase a Cardbus 100bT network card. Hi, I upgraded my laptop to a Compaq Armada 3500. Unfortunately, my 3COM 562B network+modem card stopped working. When I start or reset the card I get the message "cs: socket 0 timed out during reset". Cardctl status gives [busy] [wp] However, sometimes (very rarely) the reset works and everything is fine. THe same problem occurs in Win95/98. Other modem and network cards work fine. As the card works fine in my old laptop, the problem seems to be related to the interaction between the card and the controller. Probe returns a TI 1220, I'm using redhat 6.2 which contains pcmcia 3.1.8 Any hints how to debug this problem ? I tried playing with the reset time, but no luck. Thanks, Mark

I don't know what you mean by "share a printer". Share with what? Is this a printer that directly connects to the network, or a printer hooked up to another computer? If you intend to transfer data over this ethernet card for any purpose, you have to assign an IP address to your computer. You almost certainly don't want to be using BOOTP for this. I think this is really just a basic network setup question, and not a PCMCIA problem. It might be best to check through a book (or the HOWTO's) for help about how to configure networking. -- Dave

Sorry about the confusion. Please let me explain my situation. I am using both pc card slots. One Adaptec 1460 SlimSCSI and one 3com 3CXEM556BT multifunction card. In previous version on RH 5.2 all cards were recongnized and 4 hi-beeps were heard on bootup. Now with both RH 6.0 and RH 6.2 I hear 3 hi-beeps and 1 low beep and the connection light on the card and on the hub are not on. My network consists of my PC laptop and my daughters iMac that are both contected to a hub and the printer is connected to the hub. I do not need a IP address for either machine. This is all fine and dandy on Win and Mac but I prefer Linux. This happened with RH 6.0 and someone from this forum helped me and it worked. You are getting a low beep because no settings have been entered for your network interface. A low beep cannot ever mean that you have a resource conflict. You say that to share the printer, you don't need to configure the interface and assign an IP address. If that is true, then you are doing something that I do not understand, and I don't think I have anything to offer to solve your problem: you are going to have to find someone who knows more about networking than I do. The PCMCIA drivers are operating correctly and there are no PCMCIA configuration issues here. This is a network setup problem. The first high beep means "the driver(s) were loaded successfully". The second beep is generated when cardmgr tries to configure the network, in your case, by running "ifup eth0". If that command succeeds, you get a high beep; if it fails, you get a low beep. The outcome of "ifup eth0" depends on what network settings you have entered in "netconf". You can try running it by hand with the card inserted, to see what it says. -- Dave

Now I have the chance to buy either that or a 3Com CCFEM556B and before I'll make my decision I'd like to ask some questions on this list: 1) Has anybody got the 2 functions on Psion work simultaneously without problems? (not having access to a network where I can test this myself, all I need to hear is yes/no). 2) The same question for 3Com 3CCFEM556B. 3) I simply like 3Com's XJACK mechanism -- I'm curious if this card has 2 xjacks (one for the modem and one for the ethernet jack). If not, how does it work? 4) Finally, if you were to recommend one of them, which one would you go for? 3CCFEM556B is considerably cheaper then the Psion Gold Card, so if they both work equally well on linux, I'm thinking of getting the former. I've used the 3CCFEM556B and both functions work simultaneously. I haven't tested the Psion card. The CardBus interface is much higher performance than the original 16-bit PCMCIA interface. The max performance of the 16-bit bus is about 2 MB/sec. The max for CardBus is PCI bus speed, 133 MB/sec. For network cards, I see ~1.5 MB/sec with the 3CCFEM556B, which is not too hot for 100baseT. Something like the 3CCFE575BT will give close to 10 MB/sec. It depends on how much performance you need; for a lot of people, a cheap 100baseT card with tolerable performance is a good deal. And there are a lot more options for 16-bit 100baseT/modem cards that work with linux, than for CardBus 100baseT/modem cards. -- Dave

Here are the details: Machine: HP Omnibook XE2 Distribution: Debian 2.1/2.2 hybrid Kernel: 2.2.14 pcmcia-cs: 3.1.14-1 Please note however that I've also downloaded and compiled epic100.c v1.07h from ftp://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/linux/drivers/test/epic100.c manually. Some of the other versions I tried (don't remember which) would cause modem hangups when the ethernet was in use. No problems whatsoever with this one though. While reviewing the behavior of /etc/pcmcia/network, I found that the script calls on /etc/pcmcia/network.opts, which has hard coded values for IPADDR, NETMASK, and so on. I had assumed that the RedHat Network Configurator values were being used - but instead there are these hard coded values. So I updated the network.opts script with the correct values for my machine. Now, Either the pcmcia card initializes correctly during boot (I get a steady 100 light and I can converse with the LAN), or I get both lights off, with the 100 light blicking occasionally, and no network access. Unfortuately, I seems to NOT initialize correctly about 70% of the time, and correctly only 30% of the time. Are there some timing issues here? Any input greatly appreciated, Michael

The network.opts thing is documented in the PCMCIA-HOWTO section about Red Hat. Does ejecting and reinserting the card (or "cardctl reset") help? (or does the not-working state persist until you reboot?) Are there differences in system log messages from the 3c575_cb driver for the working and not-working states? -- Dave

Hello, I've just got a SocketCom ES-1000 (aka E-I/O) combo ethernet and RS-232 card: http://www.socketcom.com/eiomp.htm Unfortunately, I can't get the ethernet part to work, although the serial part is fine. I have added the following to /etc/pcmcia/config: card "SocketCom ES-1000 Ethernet/RS-232" manfid 0x0104, 0x000a bind "pcnet_cs", "serial_cs" Now the card is recognised and I get two high beeps. It even successfully reads the MAC address from the card. However, when I try to ping something, the ARP packets come out as all-ones - see below. My machine is a Sony Vaio PCG-C1F, running the latest RedHat kernel package (2.2.14-12). A 3com 3c562 works fine in this machine. Any suggestions? Thanks, Brian Candler. Hmm, it turns out there is a problem with this card under high load and/or with particular data patterns. When I download a large file it gets part-way through then stops - usually at around the same place. For example, ftp'ing kernel-2.2.14-5.0.src.rpm from another (local) server stops at around 600K. It's the same ftping from a different local server, but with a 3com 10baseT card in the laptop it downloads just fine. I've tried cranking up all the slowdown options: mem_speed=1000, delay_output=1, delay_time=1000, use_shmem=0 but to no avail. 'ifconfig eth0' reports a large number of RX frame errors (150-300 at a time) I know NE2K cards are of a dubious design - but I'd need to prod deeper to try and find out what is happening.

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with SuSE 6.2, kernel 2.2.10 and I cannot make the modem part to work on it. Pcmcia-cs version is 3.1.11, the card is 3CCFEM556 B (probably the European version, if that makes a difference). I have tried all IRQ combinations as written in the HOWTO, however the modem sort of works only when IRQ is set to 0, otherwise minicom takes ages to echo the initialization string and no AT commands can be input. The startup looks quite normal (syslog below). The card works with windows and uses the same interrupt as here, the ethernet part works ok on both Linux and windows. When using the ethernet, check your system log to make sure you're not getting any error messages (look for "interrupt(s) dropped" messages, specifically). I'm not sure how the interrupt could be blocked for just the modem. There is a kernel bug in the 2.2.10 serial driver that can cause problems with multifunction cards (it is documented in the PCMCIA BUGS file) but if that was your problem, you should be seeing error messages whenever you try to use the port. -- Dave

I've given it another try, using seyon instead of minicom, which turns out to be a much better tool to diagnose modem problems. I've noticed that in Windows the card installs with ioport=0x3f8, irq=10, COM1 is on 0x238 instead. I've tried the same on Linux without any luck. What I found strange: if syslog says kernel: tty03 at 0x02e8 (irq = 10) is a 16550A and I call setserial /dev/ttyS3 irq 10 then seyon cannot find any modem at all, with other irqs it does not complain but the modem does not work either. I've also looked into the BIOS settings but did not find anything special, just floppy, sound, parallel port. My Tecra has a DVD-player and an MPEG-II decoder instead of an internal modem, but they do not occur in the BIOS settings. When I use setserial to set the irq to 0, then seyon immediately echoes what I type and the modem answers, so it really looks like an interrupt problem?! --Micha

hi there, i am running a compag armada laptop with a mandrake 7.02 and a xircom rem56G-10BT ethernet-modem card. everything sems to be working ok, i am writing here using the modem side and the lan side is connected to my lan. But at startup, the initialisation process is quite slow. I get the two beeps, but the second one (serial part) only arrive nearly when the login prompt appear ! I can't see any error message in the message log, but a message appearing twice before serial is started. sorry, i don't have it any more so i tell you what i remember : autonegociation failed ; using 10 mbps can any one tell me how to prevent that behaviour ? I recently purchased a combi card for my laptop. I wanted to try and get it working in Linux. Being compleately new to PCMCIA o have spent the last few days familiarsing myself with it. The card i got was a Portable Addons Net Mobile Ethernet/Modem. Seeing there was no support i tryed a few drivers with no luck. I then hex edited the dos and windows drivers to find mentions of Olicom in there. After searching the net i identified that this card was probabily the olicom 2232 (later i found OC-2232 on the actual card). I also saw there was no support for this card either, but after searching the net several Changes files were found for pcmcia-cs-3.0.9 that had a bug fix for this card. It was also listed in the SUPPORTED.CARDS for this version, but current versions have the code removed and nothing in the chages file about this card. The only thing i could find was some defines in the ciscode.h that must have been left. I saw in the 3.0.9 config file that the olicom card used the pcnet_cs driver. This driver wouldn't work without modification. I tryed adding the code from 3.0.9 back in and adding a hw_info line (which i had to edit, so maybe the card isn't an exact copy of the Olicom card). After compiling and using this i managed to get it to work, but upon configuring the eth0 interface the screen was flooded with eth0: unexpected TX-done interrupt, lasttx=0. I have been able to use serial_cs to get the modem working and even though i haven't acutally tryed dialing out yet i managed to get it to respond to several commands in minicom so that was good enough for me. I have yet to see if there is an IRQ conflict, but i would first like to ask some questions. Was the olicom gocard ever supported? If so why did it vanish from existance? Did it use pcnet_cs and was it therefore NE2000 compatible? As far as it goes concerning an Olicom card, will i be able to get it working? It is not NE2000 compatible; if it were, then the pcnet_cs driver would have worked. I don't think we have any information about what chipset the card uses. You could try to acquire this information from the vendor. You are pretty much on your own on this. I'm not much interested in spending a lot of time developing a new driver for an obscure card; I have enough work to do maintaining the drivers that already exist. I'd advise you that your best course of action would probably be to suck it up and buy a card that is listed as working under Linux. But if you have an interest in driver development and lots of time on your hands, go ahead and give it a shot. -- Dave

Hi, I'm trying to get this combo card working on my machine. I'm running redhat 6.2 (out of the box as far as the kernel and pcmcia versions are concerned). there are no error messages from cardmgr. I do receive the one high beep and one low beep, but I believe this is because I don't have the ethernet line pluged in so the lan connection is not sucessfully completed. setserial returns a uart of 8250. The ports and irq are set by cardmgr are the same as under windoze and everything seems to work fine there. the modem is recoginized and correctly setup if "pcnet_cs" is removed from the bind line for the card in config Any suggestions? So it isn't clear from this what your problem is. You say you have not tested the network. I take it that when the modem is identified as an 8250, it doesn't work, but after you changed the "bind" line, it was identified as a 16550 and did work? Can I see the system log messages for the card in both situations? If you have a low beep, then there *is* an error message from cardmgr in your system log: I guarantee it. -- Dave

Hello, I just got this new 3com card and had to install the new pcmcia drivers on my redhat6.1 The modem is a winmodem so it doesn't work but I got the ethernet side to work. I got a problem though. The network works, but not very good. I have a normal PC with redhat6.1 connected to my laptop with a rj45 crossed cable. When I ping the machines. Everything seams ok, but when I ftp a file, or ping with a size of 10500 or bigger, the network slows down and stops. The card work fine on windows, with the same pc, same linux, same cable on the other end? Any Ideas, I tried to read the docs, but nothing about this card is out yet. Thanks. Tom.

I don't have one of this exact model, but I have some ethernet-only cards with the same ethernet chipset revision that had a somewhat similar problem. In my case, the problem is fixed in the latest beta drivers, on projects.sourceforge.net in /pub/pcmcia-cs/NEW. If those don't help, I'd want to see your system log messages. You may get "transmit timed out" messages 5-15 seconds after the network seems to lock up; I'd want to see exactly what those look like. -- Dave

I'm sorry for my english. I'll try to say again what my problem is: I have a DELL LatitudeXPiCD laptop (16M memory, 166Mhz MMX pentium) and a normal tower pc. The tower pc is on RedHat 6.1 linux with a Realtek ethernet card. 10/100 Mbits. I connect it to the laptop (I tried RedHat 6.1 and now Mandrake 7.1 -> same results) which has this 3com card with a crossed rj45 cable. No switch, no hub, no router. It is 100Mb. The problem is: I can ping my remote machine (the tower pc), that is ok. Even up to size 10000. But as soon as there is a bigger trafic on the network, the eth0 on my laptop hangs. Pings of size 15000 only pass one or two packets then hang. Ftp transfers stop at around 15K. This is the same at home or at the university where there is sometimes 10 and sometimes 100Mb connections. The lines you gave me didn't change anything :( The only way I got to make it go a bit better was to change the buffer from 1536 to 7000 and some other things like rx_copybreak=1450 instead of 200. down_poll_rate= 1000 instead of 200. I have no idea of what some of them are, I tried and checked out if it was better or not! Especially because I changed the buffer size, I can now got to pings of size 30'000 without having to restart the pcmcia afterwards. But I still got overruns. Thanks for trying! Tom

Increasing the rx buffer size should have absolutely no effect: ethernet has a maximum packet size of 1536 so anything more than that is just dead space. Are you quite sure that made a difference? -- Dave
