Hello,

who has a pcmcia from Conceptronic, named CON56CL100 or L56CL100, and it's running with linux/freebsd?

I read it's not *ix compliant...it's really true?

It's seems to be NE2000 compatible...

None Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II

Date: 1999, Nov 06
From: Eric Dittman dittman

I recently purchased an Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus II adapter. I thought this was an OEM modem of the Xircom RealPort card, but it turns out it isn't. I've tried adding a clone of the RealPort card to /etc/pcmcia/config, but I get the message from tulip_cb that the EEPROM is missing. The 21143 version is identified, but the bus doesn't work. The serial driver doesn't load either, reporting a missing Tuple. The odd thing is I checked the E100bnt.sys file from Win98 and the chipset is identified as an 82557.

Is anyone working on this card? I know the Tulip chipset is supported by the PCMCIA package, but as far as I can tell the 82557 isn't.

Question Modem problem with Xircom CEM33 on Dell Lattitude CP

Date: 1999, Nov 12
From: Ben Mesman mesmanb

I have a Dell Lattitude CP (166MMX) with a Xircom CEM33 ethernet/modem card. With windows95 both netwerk and modem work (even when I use them at the same time). But with Linux, I only can get the ethernet interface to work. There are no errors in the syslog, but there is no reaction from the modem to anything.

I am using debian 2.1 (slink), upgraded to kernel 2.2.13 (from kernel.org) and the debian package pcmcia-source_3.1.3-1. I tried to set the serial IRQ to 0, still no reaction.

I included the syslog with a failed ppp attempt.

Question Xircom RealPort Cardbus Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56 timeout....

Date: 1999, Dec 01
From: Cahlen Humphreys Cahlen

I have been having a problem with my Xircom pcmcia multifunction card. It initialates fine and all, but when I assign the device an IP address and such it work. Then, whenever I try to connect to a remote host whether it be through "ping" or whatever I get a timeout response. This is what it looks like.

eth0: Transmit timed out, status ffffffff, CSR12 000000c2, resetting...

I really don't know what to do... Is anyone having a similar problem that they can help me out with?

Thanks,

-Cahlen

Question Linksys Etherfast 56k+LAN: long pings after suspend

Date: 1999, Dec 13
From: Alan Shutko AlanShutko

I just got a Linksys Etherfast 56k LANmodem to get away from the evil dongle problem. Installed without a hitch... I removed the 3com card, plugged in the Linksys, and ran. Very cool.

However, after I suspend, I find I oscillate between normal ping times and ping times almost = 1s. This on a local net where normal ping time is about 1ms. If I remove the card and reinsert it, all is well again.

Any ideas? Toshiba 315CDS in Cardbus mode, 16-bit card, Linux 2.2.13, PCMCIA-CS 3.1.4.

Sad Xircom CEM33 does not work properly with pcmcia-cs 3.1.8

Date: 2000, Jan 14
From: Martijn Anthonissen martijn

When I tried upgrading my kernel from 2.2.12 to 2.2.14 the modem part of my Xircom CEM33 card stopped working. I've looked into this a little, and the problem seems to be with the pcmcia card services.

The combination kernel 2.2.12 + pcmcia-cs 3.1.2 worked flawlessly. My modem was recognized and placed on /dev/ttyS3.

When booting kernel 2.2.14 + pcmcia-cs 3.1.8, the modem is placed on /dev/ttyS2, and it doesn't work. Only the ethernet part of the CEM33 functions.

At this point I did some experiments. Booting 2.2.14 without any of the 3.1.8 modules and then inserting the "old" 3.1.2 modules by
      insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o
      insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/i82365.o
      insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/ds.o
      insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/xirc2ps_cs.o
      insmod -f /lib/modules/2.2.12/pcmcia/serial_cs.o
leads to a properly functioning modem.

However, booting 2.2.14 and inserting the new 3.1.8 pcmcia_core module and for the four other modules the 3.1.2 ones places the modem on the wrong /dev/ttyS2 device again.

I thought I'd also try and compile an unstable kernel, 2.3.39, as I'd read that the pcmcia code will be included with the kernel. When booting 2.3.39, the modem is placed on ttyS2, as with the 3.1.8 modules.

Below, a typical piece of my syslog is listed, including an unsuccessful dial-in attempt.

I hope someone can help out, TIA,

Martijn

Hello,

I'm looking for help how to set up the multifunction ethernet/modem card ComNet 33.6 from ActionTec.
I had to add

card "ActionTec"
 manfid 0x0175,0x000
 bind "pcnet_cs"

The card is recognized then but it doesn't work. I'm running
Debian potato, apart from the lines above I haven't changed
any config files. I tried also Debian kernel-2.2.13 and
older pcmcia with the same errors, only ReleaseWindow
 message is missing.

Question Xircom RBEM56G + serial port problem

Date: 2000, Feb 23
From: Sebastien Stormacq sebsto

Hello,

I have the following problem with a Xircom RBEM56G-100 (Card Bus)

The cardmgr correctly recognize the card but set it on ttyS0 instead of ttyS2 This prevents me to use my real serial port ttyS0 (link to a palmpilot)

I found a workaround (thanks to Philipe Henry / phenry@resopharma.fr) : removing the setserial command (or removing its eXecute rigth) makes everything works OK (card is recognized, modem is installed on ttyS2 and is working and my real ttyS0 works fine)

Why this behavior ? Any cleaner solution ?

Thanks

Seb

I have a Problem with my Xircom RBEM56G-100 (Real-Port Cardbus Ethernet 10/100 +Modem 56). I'm using SuSE Linux 6.3. The card is detected by the cardmgr. The Modules cb_enabler, tulip and serial_cb are loaded. The Laptop (Compaq Armada 7800) hangs, when the Module serial_cb is loaded. Can someone help me?

I have the feeling that the problem is widespread, but very simple to correct. Also, my in my bios, I can set up the serial, ir, sound, and parallel ports, so I know those ports and irqs, etc. A couple weeks ago, it seemed that I could get the ethernet part of the card to work, but I didn't have a network to test it on.

Also, with the kernel serial drivers, I have many_ports, and share_irqs enabled, but I don't think that makes a difference. The combo card is built in, so I assume my macine has 4 pcmcia slots. (cardctl info shows slots 0 - 3)

someone please point me in the right direction with this one. I'm not a newbie to linux, I promise.

How can I get at least the modem part of this card to work? Any ideas if any of the current drivers will work? What would it take to write a driver if none of the others will work? Thanks.

Question Modem not working in Linksys PCMLM56 and 2.2.14

Date: 2000, Mar 16
From: Ivan Kocher ikocher

Hi, I have a Sager laptop, with a PCMLM56 Linksys lan+modem.
I use Slackware 7.0, which comes with 2.2.13. I upgraded to 2.2.14 and recompiled PC Card services 3.0.14.

With kernel 2.2.13 the card works perfect, although I still haven't used the lan, but from W98 is ok (it works).

When I insert the card it gets its io, mem and irq, but the modem does not work. My laptop little monitoring LCD tells me that there is some communication with the PC card, but the modem does nothing. I tried minicom, ppp-go (chat & pppd),and a simple echo "ATZ" > /dev/ttyS2. I checked permisions and all that, and they are ok.

If I reboot with 2.2.13 back again, the card works, but then with 2.2.14 it does not.

Now I have it working with 2.2.14, but the /etc/pcmcia/config modified, commented out the bind for "pcnet_cs":
	# bind "pcnet_cs", "serial_cs"
        bind "serial_cs"

Here is dmesg output with >>>bind "pcnet_cs", "serial_cs"
With this one the modem does nothing, although the kernel can communicate with the UART, it recognizes it as a 16550A, thing that is the same if I use 2.2.13

tty02 at 0x03e8 (irq = 9) is a 16550A
------------------<<<

I tried modifing the serial_cs.c, and adding the irq auto detection option (ASYNC_AUTO_IRQ) to the serial.flags in the serial_setup function, and the kernel recognized the modem using the irq 9, the same as the network part.

My .config for my kernel is:
 ... zip ...
#
# Character devices
#
CONFIG_VT=y
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_SERIAL=y
CONFIG_SERIAL_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_SERIAL_EXTENDED=y
CONFIG_SERIAL_MANY_PORTS=y
CONFIG_SERIAL_SHARE_IRQ=y
# CONFIG_SERIAL_DETECT_IRQ is not set
CONFIG_SERIAL_MULTIPORT=y
CONFIG_HUB6=y
# CONFIG_SERIAL_NONSTANDARD is not set
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS=y
CONFIG_UNIX98_PTY_COUNT=512
CONFIG_PRINTER=m
CONFIG_PRINTER_READBACK=y
CONFIG_MOUSE=y
 ... zip ...

Am I doing something wrong? Is it a serial bug somewhere that doesn't work with irq sharing? Do I have to turn on some swith in the kernel?, pc card services?

Thanks,

Ivan Kocher

Date: 2000, Mar 24
From: Dimitrios P. Bouras <dbouras@hol.gr>

The system is a MITAC 6133S (433 MHz Celeron) with a Xircom
RealPort CardBus Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56K (RBEM56G-100BTX);
the rest is obvious from the logs below.

The following log excerpt is from first time I ran into the problem
(system crash); note that even though everything else is 3.1.3,
tulip_cb is from 3.1.1 (tulip-old_cb.o). In order to reduce clutter,
I have replaced long series of identical messages with '...'; my

The above crash would happen approximately at the end of a roughly
3 GB tape backup, on a remote SCSI tape over the LAN. I tried the
same thing 3-4 times and sure enough it was reproducible (my MITAC
6133S crashed every single time).

I subsequently downloaded/tried version 3.1.12. Everything seemed
to work fine, but the transceiver didn't seem to work properly:
pings to LAN IP addresses would not work. However, a tcpdump at
the remote end showed proper arp and echo request packets comming
in, which must mean that the problem is in the receiver-specific
portion of the driver.

This time I decided to go tinkering around in the tulip_cb source,
searching for changes from 3.1.1 to 3.1.13. This didn't yield
anything interesting (none of my changes made the card work), but
I managed to get more detailed debugging output (the output here
is from the unmodified 2.1.13 tylip_cb.c with debug=3):

*Then*, an "accident" reminded me of something I read in the docs
somewhere: I ran tcpdump on the laptop and all of a sudden, I started
getting responses to pings. You guessed it: tcpdump places the
interface in promiscuous mode, which happens to make the card
"work". I did an "ifconfig eth0 promisc" and tried the backup again.
What I noticed was that I was still getting messages like the following:

----
Mar 24 08:18:49 neptune kernel: tulip.c: outl_CSR6 too many attempts,csr5=0x60218140
...
Mar 24 08:18:49 neptune kernel: tulip.c: outl_CSR6 too many attempts,csr5=0x60208100
...
Mar 24 23:39:18 neptune kernel: tulip.c: outl_CSR6 too many attempts,csr5=0x600e8002
----

*but* the backup did not crash the laptop this time. I was concerned
with data integrity (was there any data corruption?) but managed to
persuade myself that all was OK. What I did was I transfered a 70 MB
sub-dir over the LAN, then mounted the original and did a "diff -r";
no problem at all, even though I counted a fair amount of "too many
attempts" messages when the transfer was under way.

That's more or less it. I'm willing to help out in debugging/resolving
this problem if only someone more knowledgeable would tell me what to
do :)

With best regards from Athens,
Dimitri

Question Difficulty with 3COM 3CXEM556BC Megahertz modem

Date: 2000, Apr 14
From: Alexander Russell Alex_Russell

Hi,

I'm having some trouble with my 3Com 3CXEM556BC on a Dell Inspiron 7500 running RedHat 6.2. This is a multifunction card: it's the serial modem half of the card which is giving me trouble. The card is properly identified, and the modem seems to work just fine at low bandwidth. As soon as I begin to fetch a large file, say, the transmission quits after about 100k. (This is at 28.8kbps.) I can restart the download and witness the same behavior over and over. (Unfortunately, I am not sure if this represents loss of received or (un)sent packets.)

I'm not sure what to try next. Many thanks!

Alex Russell

Details:

The card seems to be identified correctly:

[root@hermes acr]# cardctl ident
Socket 0:

Socket 1:

  manfid: 0x0101, 0x0035
  function: 0 (multifunction)
[root@hermes acr]

Setserial seems reasonably happy:
[root@hermes acr]# setserial -ga /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
	Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
	closing_wait: 3000, closing_wait2: infinte
	Flags: spd_normal skip_test

(The serial half and the ethernet half do seem to be sharing an interrupt: is this ok?)

[root@hermes acr]# cat /proc/interrupts

Sad 3Com 562 + Armada 3500

Date: 2000, Apr 17
From: Mark van ROssum vrossum

	Hi,

I upgraded my laptop to a Compaq Armada 3500. Unfortunately, my 3COM 562B network+modem card stopped working.

When I start or reset the card I get the message "cs: socket 0 timed out during reset". Cardctl status gives [busy] [wp]

However, sometimes (very rarely) the reset works and everything is fine.

THe same problem occurs in Win95/98. Other modem and network cards work fine.

As the card works fine in my old laptop, the problem seems to be related to the interaction between the card and the controller. Probe returns a TI 1220, I'm using redhat 6.2 which contains pcmcia 3.1.8

Any hints how to debug this problem ? I tried playing with the reset time, but no luck.

	Thanks,

	Mark

I just bought a 3Com multifunction pc card (card bus) It's so recent that I can't find infos about the compatibility of this product and linux (especially the modem) 3Com doesn't reply my e mails After the girl of the commercial service told me it is compatible, I bought, but now I'm scared it's not the card is not recognized when linux boots up : even the lan composant. is the modem of that pc card a winmodem or is it just that the linux card bus driver is not ready now ?

Question 3Com 3CCFEM556B vs Psion Gold Card Netglobal 56K+10/100Mb CardBus

Date: 2000, Apr 29
From: Berkan Eskikaya berkan

Hi,

I've got an HP Omnibook XE2 laptop --with kernel 2.2.14
and pcmcia-cs 3.1.8 installed-- and have recently acquired
a Psion multifunction PC card (the one in the title above).

I haven't yet had the chance to test the ethernet part,
but the modem is working fine.

Now I have the chance to buy either that or a 3Com
CCFEM556B and before I'll make my decision I'd like to
ask some questions on this list:

1) Has anybody got the 2 functions on Psion work
simultaneously without problems? (not having access to
a network where I can test this myself, all I need to
hear is yes/no).

2) The same question for 3Com 3CCFEM556B.

3) I simply like 3Com's XJACK mechanism -- I'm curious
if this card has 2 xjacks (one for the modem and one
for the ethernet jack). If not, how does it work?

4) Finally, if you were to recommend one of them, which
one would you go for? 3CCFEM556B is considerably cheaper
then the Psion Gold Card, so if they both work equally
well on linux, I'm thinking of getting the former.

Cheers,

Berkan

PS: One last question: what is the difference between a
Cardbus interface and a normal (16bit?) interface?
Whatever it is, is it enough to go for the more expensive
card? This is probably not the most appropriate place
to ask this, so if somebody could point to a reference etc
that I can read that would be great too. Thanks again.

Question 3CCFEM656BT doesn't work with 3.1.15

Date: 2000, May 18
From: Michael Barton mgbarton

Ok, so I install the latest stable release of pcmcia
(3.1.15), and tried to use it with the 3Com 10/100 LAN+56K
Modem (3CCFEM656BT). I'm only interested in the LAN part.

As Linux comes up, I see the pcmcia driver load, I get two
high beeps, and the two LEDs on the dongle turn on. At this
point under Win98, one turns off, the remaining one
indicating the speed (10 or 100Mbs). Instead, both lights
remain on, and my 10-BaseT hub shows no carrier from the card.

Note that there is not 'completed' message for the starting of eth0.

I can run the X11 based Network Configurator, and under
interfaces, eth0 shows as inactive. Sometimes I
can 'Activate' the interface, and the card finishes
initializing (one light turns off, the hub says it sees a
carrier, and I can converse with the LAN). Other times, both
lights go off, with the 100 light blinking occasionally (3-5
seconds between each). Sometimes I can't get this far - The
card enters the 'both lights off, with the 100 blinking
occasionally' as soon as pcmcia is initialized during boot.

If I run 'sh -x /etc/pcmcia/network start eth0', the log
looks like this:

Unplugging and re-plugging the card yeilds the same set of

None SocketCom ES-1000 Ethernet/RS-232 card

Date: 2000, May 22
From: Brian Candler <b.candler@pobox.com>

Hello,

I've just got a SocketCom ES-1000 (aka E-I/O) combo ethernet and RS-232 card: http://www.socketcom.com/eiomp.htm

Unfortunately, I can't get the ethernet part to work, although the serial part is fine. I have added the following to /etc/pcmcia/config:

 card "SocketCom ES-1000 Ethernet/RS-232"
   manfid 0x0104, 0x000a
   bind "pcnet_cs", "serial_cs"

Now the card is recognised and I get two high beeps. It even successfully reads the MAC address from the card. However, when I try to ping something, the ARP packets come out as all-ones - see below.

My machine is a Sony Vaio PCG-C1F, running the latest RedHat kernel package (2.2.14-12). A 3com 3c562 works fine in this machine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Brian Candler.

From: Micha Meier micha

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with SuSE 6.2, kernel 2.2.10
and I cannot make the modem part to work on it. Pcmcia-cs
version is 3.1.11, the card is 3CCFEM556 B (probably the
European version, if that makes a difference). I have tried
all IRQ combinations as written in the HOWTO, however the
modem sort of works only when IRQ is set to 0, otherwise
minicom takes ages to echo the initialization string and
no AT commands can be input. The startup
looks quite normal (syslog below). The card works with
windows and uses the same interrupt as here, the ethernet
part works ok on both Linux and windows. Can anybody
tell me, where the problem could be?

Question How to disable serial device on Ethernet/Modem card?

Date: 2000, Jun 21
From: Steve Snyder SteveSnyder

I've got a 3Com 3C562 Ethernet/Modem card and don't plan to use the modem device. My goal is to save the 28KB of RAM devoted to this device that I'll never use.

Is it possible (using pcmcia-cs v3.1.16) to disable the serial device (serial_cs), leaving just the Ethernet device (3c589_cs) available for use? If so, how is it done?

Thank you.

Question Portable Addons Net Mobile Ethernet/33.6 Modem aka Olicom Gocard 2232

Date: 2000, Jul 24
From: Michael Nicholls phreakster

I recently purchased a combi card for my laptop. I wanted to try and get it working in Linux. Being compleately new to PCMCIA o have spent the last few days familiarsing myself with it.

The card i got was a Portable Addons Net Mobile Ethernet/Modem. Seeing there was no support i tryed a few drivers with no luck. I then hex edited the dos and windows drivers to find mentions of Olicom in there. After searching the net i identified that this card was probabily the olicom 2232 (later i found OC-2232 on the actual card).

I also saw there was no support for this card either, but after searching the net several Changes files were found for pcmcia-cs-3.0.9 that had a bug fix for this card. It was also listed in the SUPPORTED.CARDS for this version, but current versions have the code removed and nothing in the chages file about this card. The only thing i could find was some defines in the ciscode.h that must have been left. I saw in the 3.0.9 config file that the olicom card used the pcnet_cs driver. This driver wouldn't work without modification.

I tryed adding the code from 3.0.9 back in and adding a hw_info line (which i had to edit, so maybe the card isn't an exact copy of the Olicom card). After compiling and using this i managed to get it to work, but upon configuring the eth0 interface the screen was flooded with eth0: unexpected TX-done interrupt, lasttx=0.

I have been able to use serial_cs to get the modem working and even though i haven't acutally tryed dialing out yet i managed to get it to respond to several commands in minicom so that was good enough for me.

I have yet to see if there is an IRQ conflict, but i would first like to ask some questions.

Was the olicom gocard ever supported?

If so why did it vanish from existance?

Did it use pcnet_cs and was it therefore NE2000 compatible?

As far as it goes concerning an Olicom card, will i be able to get it working?

Sorry its a long post, just looking for some history and info on the Olicom card.

Cheers

Mike

Question SMC Ethernet/Modem Multifunction card

Date: 2000, Jul 27
From: Giray Devlet <giray@osc.nl>

Hi ...

 I'm running RH6.2 (2.2.14) and have a multi card
which identifies itself as

  SMC ETHEREZ ETHERNET/MODEM 8020 V1.00

I have not been able to get it working as an ethernet
card, it insists on loading serial_cs and act as an
modem.

 It says "function 2 (serial)"

Is there a way to specify another function?

Question Linksys PCMLM56 & Chicony MP983

Date: 2000, Aug 02
From: Ryan Elliott <elliottr@umich.edu>

Hi,

I'm trying to get this combo card working on my machine.

I'm running redhat 6.2 (out of the box as far as the kernel
and pcmcia versions are concerned).

there are no error messages from cardmgr. I do receive the
one high beep and one low beep,
but I believe this is because I don't have the ethernet line
pluged in so the lan connection is not sucessfully completed.

setserial returns a uart of 8250.

The ports and irq are set by cardmgr are the same as under
windoze and everything seems to work fine there.

the modem is recoginized and correctly setup if "pcnet_cs" is
removed from the bind line for the card in config

Any suggestions?

			Thanks

Question 3COM-3CXFEM656C ethernet problems!

Date: 2000, Aug 20
From: Thomas Pfund toma

Hello, I just got this new 3com card and had to install the
new pcmcia drivers on my redhat6.1
The modem is a winmodem so it doesn't work but I got the
ethernet side to work. I got a problem though. The network
works, but not very good. I have a normal PC with redhat6.1
connected to my laptop with a rj45 crossed cable. When I
ping the machines. Everything seams ok, but when I ftp a
file, or ping with a size of 10500 or bigger, the network
slows down and stops. The card work fine on windows, with
the same pc, same linux, same cable on the other end?

Any Ideas, I tried to read the docs, but nothing about this
card is out yet.

 Thanks. Tom.
