Question: Multitech MT5634ZLX modem problems

We are trying to use a Multitech MT5634ZLX PCMCIA modem on a Dell Inspiron 3500. The card is recognized as a serial device and installed but we cannot talk to the modem at all. Is anyone using this device? BTW, the modem operates fine under Windows 98. The device is not a Winmodem. We are running Debian 2.1, Card Services 3.0.14, 2.2.7 kernel. I have no problems running other PCMCIA cards, Ethernet and even CardBus Fast Ethernet.
