Ok Uniden Data 2000 wireless CDPD internet card works

CDPD is a wireless digital IP service available in many cities in the USA.

Uniden will claim the Data 2000 card is for the Windows only, but it can be made to work under Linux with little trouble. You may need to upgrade card services if the machine locks up when the card is recognized. This version works:

stetson:/etc/X11> uname -rv
2.0.36 #1 Tue Oct 13 22:17:11 EDT 1998
stetson:/etc/X11> cardctl -V
cardctl version 3.0.14

I set the modem up under Windows first. Use the undocumented "ATDT2" command, and a static IP, to start SLIP mode in Unix. I did not get PPP to work:

'ABORT' 'BUSY'
'ABORT' 'ERROR'
'ABORT' 'NO CARRIER'
'ABORT' 'NO DIALTONE'
'ABORT' 'Invalid Login'
'ABORT' 'Login incorrect'
'' 'ATZ'
'OK' 'ATDT2'
'CONNECT' ''

The Data 2000 card sucks rocks, and is nearly unusable on battery. With the power adaptor, it functions at about 1/4 the speed of Uniden's own Data 1000 external modem.

Sierra Wireless or Novatel modems may be a better choice. Sierra technical supports says the old cards work on Linux, but the newest card is actually a network adaptor, not a modem. Linux support is unknown, but Sierra is aware of the issue.
