You might try playing with the MTU for the interface

Some of this might be ameliorated by making the MTU (maximum transfer
unit) for the wireless interface smaller.  You should get fewer lost
packets if the packets are smaller.  The default ethernet MTU is
around 1500 bytes; you can say "ifconfig eth0 mtu XXX" to set a
smaller value.

A smaller MTU will give somewhat lower peak performance, however.
