I tried setting MTU to 552 and 296. It works OK at 552,
so I leave it there. I still need to figure out how to run
NFS over TCP.

BTW, I got a lot of invalid:misc from iwconfig. Is that
normal? The data rate drops from 11M from time to time.
On certain channels, it can barely stay at 2M. Are there
any hints and tips on tuning the performance?

I am using Andreas Neuhaus <andy@fasta.fh-dortmund.de>'s
wvlan_cs: WaveLAN/IEEE PCMCIA driver v1.0.4. (Lucent
doesn't have a driver for Alpha.)

The iwconfig log is below.

wvlan0 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"non-specified SSID !!" Nickname:"HERMES I"
