as posting to the hypernews email didn't work - after a few emails from david 
- the following line in /etc/pcmcia.conf (debian's config file) made it work!
  CORE_OPTS="cb_pci_irq=11"

note that the wvlan_cs (the Open source driver DOES work!!) and I can now ping both ways :)
