Sad USB and PCMCIA (ray_cs) hangs

I am having some problems with since installing USB support on my machine
(2.2 backport of usb-2.3.99-pre7-1, pcmcia 3.1.16, kernel 2.2.15).
PCMCIA and USB share IRQ 9:

00:13.0 CardBus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c475
Subsystem: Citicorp TTI: Unknown device 105a

Interrupt: pin D routed to IRQ 9
	Region 4: I/O ports at f4e0

If I have the uhci USB module installed and insert the ray_cs card the system
hard locks wothout beeping. If I insert uhci when the card is already in
there is no problem and both run fine. The Xircom CEM56 modem/ether card seems
to behave ok (though it may hang occasionally). Unfortunately I get no
logging messages before it dies, but here are the normal startup messages:

Of course this may just be a USB problem, but the fact that it only happens
with one card suggests it may not be...

With uhci installed here is a log with the Xircom card:
