It seems my machines were out of range (in building, through the walls). Now I moved them closer together and ping started to work. However the WMAC messages were still there until I removed and reinserted one of the cards.
After that, all seems fine. It would still be nice to know if someone else gets the same behaviour if no other cards are in range... Danilo
