The "usage: ifup <device name>" message does not mean the interface is
not known; if you do "ifconfig -a" you will see that it is there.  It
means that "ifup" could not find a network configuration file for this
interface.

The Red Hat "netconf" and "ifup" tools only know how to configure
standard ethernet devices with eth* names.  You can't use the Red Hat
network setup programs to configure this device.  So you are getting
bit by the fact that Red Hat's default PCMCIA setup installs a special
network script that calls their tools.

If you install the standard PCMCIA network configuration scripts, then
you can enter your network settings in /etc/pcmcia/network.opts using
the instructions in the PCMCIA-HOWTO.
