I tried the above suggestion by David Hinds, but it had no effect. I then read in Rel 0.89 of the HP-HOWTO (p69) that on an Omnibook XE there is an i/o port conflict between the sound card and PCMCIA card, and that line 6 in the file /etc/pcmcia/config.opts shoulds be modified as follows:
include port 0x300-0x4ff, port 0x1000-0x17ff This seems to solve the problem! I have booted the notebook with the Xircom card inserted several times and have had no further problems. The reason is not quite clear though, because according to the system log, the ESS Maestro sound card uses port 0xf800. I have sent e-mail to the author of the HP-HOWTO to ask for more information, which I will post here when I reaceive something. I would also appreciate some advice on installing a new version of the pcmcia drivers. When I boot with rev 3.1.8 which came with the RedHat, driver modules are loaded using insmod and everything seems fine. When I installed rev 3.1.19 following the instructions in the HOWTO, I see the following in the system log :
cardmgr: Card services does not match It then loads the driver modules using modprobe, and the network starts up as inactive. Attempts to use the network result in the following messages in the log:
modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-22 I guess I must do something extra to introduce the new modules to the kernel, but what? Thanks Hester van Rooyen
