damn, I thought I could do some magic here. The symtoms I 
had matched your description, i.e. ifconfig looked ok. One
thing I noticed was that "route" wasn't set up correctly,
it did not have a default route. Check the output of 
"route" to see what happens in your case. If there is a 
problem you can try to add a default route by hand. 

My setup is like this; I have
a DELL I3700 and a RBEM56G 10/100 card. I run Debian potato
(its just out, see with kernel 2.2.17 and 
pcmcia-cs 3.1.19. My trick already worked with 2.2.13 and
pcmcia-cs 3.1.8.

more you could have a look at and

There seems to be a way to drive a tulip based CardBus pcmcia
card with the normal tulip driver in the kernel. I did
not try this since my card works :) but perhaps it helps

BTW, to the general public on this list, has anybody ever 
tried this? Should this approach be a part of the pcmcia-cs
