Sad RB100 - ping itself ok, ping outside no response, arp no h/w address

hi,

I have just upgraded from RedHat 6.0 to 6.2 Then upgraded kernel to 2.2.16 and pcmcia package to 3.1.19

The system and pcmcia boot up normally and successfully, eth0 come up successfully. The xircom realport cardbus 10/100+56 can ping its own IP address. But when it fails to ping an IP on the LAN. Typing "arp -a" even shows incomplete hardware address.

I've also tried changing the "pcmcia" startup script order with "network" - no improvements. I've tried using pcmcia 3.1.8 with my new kernel - no improvements.

I used to use kernel 2.2.9 and pcmcia 3.0.12 before. Everything is working fine. I can now boot back this old kernel with old pcmcia package. The LAN card work normally when booted back.

Any idea? Any body here successfully in making it with 2.2.16 & 3.1.19?

Regards, Alan

hi,

After enable the card with promiscous mode, I got it successfully in pinging outside world and "arp -a" shows correct MAC address of other computer on the LAN

I read from the "known problems" that tulip_cb.c is unstable with Xircom Cardbus Realport because there are so many chip version of Digital Tulip chip.

???Any hints on modifying the tulip_cb.c such that I don't need to enable promiscous for my card (it's too cpu intensive because i am in a very busy hub segment of my office)??? Alternatively, if you have experience, which OLD pcmcia-cs package works to me?

Thanks Alan

P.S. "known problems" URL is http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ftp/BUGS

Summary of my Findings (all the following is under kernel 2.2.16, and my card is probed as DEC 21143 compatible mode revision 3)

pcmcia-cs 3.0.14:
  compile tulip_cb.c v0.91 4/14/99
  probed my eth0 at 0xa00
  probed my ttyS0 at 0xa80
*result: two high beeps during boot, eth0 UP and responds to pings from attaching network

pcmcia-cs 3.1.19:
  compile tulip_cb.c v0.91g 7/16/99
probed my card as DEC 21143 compatible mode revision 3
  probed my eth0 at 0x100
  probed my ttyS0 at 0x180
*result: two high beeps during boot, eth0 UP but NOT responds to pings from attaching network
*resolution: after enabled promiscous mode it can be ping

Any idea? Is 3.1.19 wrongly probed the address?

Regards, Alan
