Question: eth0: RX drop, too much done

Forum: Xircom PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter Issues
Date: 1999, Nov 25
From: Mark Harvey <mark.harvey@enstor.com.au>

I'm running Linux 2.2.13 kernel and pcmcia-cs-3.1.4 (04-Nov-99 This is to fix the 10/100 problem with Xircom).

<background information> I have just installed Legato client backup software on my laptop to do a network backup to the backup server. My co-worker was having all sorts of problems with his laptop (same configuration as mine but no backup running). ie very slow. </bacground information>

His log files were full of the following:

Nov 26 10:20:23 xsara kernel: xirc2ps_cs: eth0: RX drop, too much done
Nov 26 10:20:54 xsara last message repeated 2352 times
Nov 26 10:21:55 xsara last message repeated 4221 times
Nov 26 10:22:56 xsara last message repeated 3908 times
Nov 26 10:24:00 xsara last message repeated 2602 times
Nov 26 10:25:00 xsara last message repeated 1472 times
Nov 26 10:25:00 xsara CRON[1123]: (root) CMD (/sbin/rmmod -a)
Nov 26 10:25:00 xsara kernel: xirc2ps_cs: eth0: RX drop, too much done
etc....

All machines are connected to a 100Mbit hub.

Is this a fact of life where the amount of data on the 100BaseT is just too fast for the pcmcia interface or is it a problem in the xircom driver ?

Best regards Mark Harvey
