Are you sure that irq 5 is genuinely free? (and not just happens to be free at the moment: have you accounted for all your devices, including your sound card?) My first suggestion would be to try upgrading to the latest PCMCIA package, which is currently 3.1.11, on the chance it is something that has already been fixed.
