well, I got it working now. The pcmcia howto in sec 2.5.2
seems to say that "things" (the network) will work under
redhat without doing creating the network.opts file. This
section also seems to be indicating that the file will not
exsists prior to this time. Since the file did exist, and
had a @$#% of a lot of network related stuff in it already,
i had no idea what would happen if I blew the RH6.1 version
of the file away and tried using just the lines supplied in
the pcmcia howto. I never could get this to work correctly.
Out of dispration I finally removed the old version of the file and created a new one with just the lines from the howto in it... now everything works. I have no idea why... Note to D. Hinds: You might want to add some wording to the howto... since it doesnt look like "i dont care about the redhat tools" method discribed in 2.5.2 will work. -al
