I read something about this on the old forums at Stanford for debian users. For SuSE 6.2 the command to type is "chmod a-x /sbin/setserial" which avoid automatic setting of irq at boot time for ttyS* ports.
With this command the xircom pcmcia modem is on ttyS2 port and works fine. I still don't know if I can access my DOS COM1 and COM2 ports...
