If you are having errors in PCMCIA with setserial and you are running Debian, could you please try updating to the newest setserial in potato (if you're running potato) and work with the Debian setserial maintainer to fix this? I.e., file a bug....

Thanks -- that will ensure that when potato releases, we will have a nice system for laptop users without fuss or muss.
