Machine freezes for 2-3 seconds on insertion of Xircom REM56G-100BTX

The card works fine, but each time the REM56G-100BTX Ethernet/Modem card is inserted, the entire machine freezes totally -- no mouse, no graphic updates, no process, nothing -- for 2-3 seconds. Normal? Bug? NEC Versa 6200MX, TI PCI1130 controller http://sunflower.singnet.com.sg/~anupmc/Linux_on_6200MMX.html
