Question: 56k Modem Almost Working

I have a Xircom Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56 and a Dell Inspiron 7500 running RH6.2

I have the Ethernet portion working fine however when I try to configure the modem it connects but the quickly disconnects with the following in /var/log/messages 

Jun 14 12:47:24 spinweb12 pppd[2488]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0
Jun 14 12:47:24 spinweb12 ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp1 on /dev/modem at 57600
Jun 14 12:47:37 spinweb12 pppd[2488]: Connect script failed
Jun 14 12:47:38 spinweb12 pppd[2488]: Exit.
